How are ATV’s able to drive halfway under water/mud?
I saw some videos on some off road ATV’s, and I don’t really know much about them…. I always wondered when they are half way under the mud, how is the engine still able to run? How does the muffler able to still work with the air coming out?
It’s done by snorkeling the machine. By extending your intake, exhaust and venting. This way the machine can still get air to run and still stay water tight. There are companies out there that sell kits to do this like Bayou, Triangle ATV and Highlifter. Or it can be done on your own with PVC tubing, fittings and spa hose.
For instance my Can-Am Outlander is snorkeled. All I had to do was run tubing from the intake and the CVT cover (Clutch). After that I made sure all my electrical connection were waterproof with a coating of dielectric jell. The way I have this machine snorkel routed is concidered steath. All the tubes are hid under the center handlebar pod. So thats about as high as I can go in the water. But if I went with tubing extended above the body of my machine I could pretty much make my quad into a submarine. That’s just as long as I can keep my 29.5 Outlaw mud tires from floating.

Jeep Cherokee mudding and alternator.?
With the alternator being placed so low in the car inst it susceptible to shorting out from water and such? I’ve seen a lot of videos of Cherokees going through water well above the alternator, is there something that needs to be done to make this possible, or is there something i’m missing here?
Usually the alternator location isnt so much of a problem as the windings are generally sealed. If left submerged in water for a period of time, it will lead to corrosion problems. The main worry with deep water crossings is oil and lubricant contamination in engine oil, transfer cases, transmission, and differentials. These must be inspected regularly any time deep water is crossed. The Cherokee will run through deep water without shorting problems, of course as long as you have a snorkel that will keep you from flooding out the engine. Have fun!!

Muddstock is a country music festival featured in Brad Paisley’s music video for mud on the tires. I would like to know if anyone can help me get info on where it is and what the dates are? The website doesn’t help at all. /:

99 suburban, trying to keep street legal?
i just bought a 1999 suburban and want to put a lift on it. i am mainly going to be using it for mud boggin. i live in NY
-i dont know if it is different for states of type of vehicle but:
what is the biggest lift i can put on my truck before it is no longer street legal?
how far can the tires stick out from the wheele well?
biggest size tires i can put on before it is no longer street legal?
can you remove windows and replace with sheet metal?
i have a 95 jeep cherokee that can not be driven on the road and the suburban will be used to tow the jeep.
will the lift cause any problems while i am towing anything?
any questions you answer or websites you may include that will further help me is appreciated.

The limitations on lift vary from one state to another, but generally the limit is based on bumper height from the ground. The idea is to ensure that in the event of a collision one vehicle doesn’t ‘porpoise’ under the other, which can potentially cause decapitation of the occupants…not a good thing.
The best place to start looking is your state’s DMV or equivalent website. Good luck.
