whats the difference between two whell drive and four wheel drive related to automobiles?
how does it effect the performance of the car.which is better two wheel drive or four wheel drive.
Define performance? Gunning your car on a straight freeway or doing twisties going down the mountain. 4 wheel drive can be alot of fun, to play with. In cars I recommend a Subaru WRX STi in SUVs and Trucks go with what you need.

In a two wheel drive, only two of the four wheels are actually poewred by the engine. The other two wheels just spin freely. Four wheel drives have all four wheels powered. You don't need a 4 wheel drive if you don't do a lot of off-roading and if you don't have harsh slippery winters. Most vehicles are two wheel drive.

Two wheel drive, drives either the front axle (front wheel drive) or the rear axle (rear wheels drive).
Then there is four wheel drive, and all wheel drive.
Four wheel drive is typically used for off road vehicles, the transfer case has a low range, and when placed in low range the front and rear prop shafts turn as one – and if the axles are locked, they do as well – thus turning all four wheels at the same time regardless of traction. This is NOT good for the street, and such systems usually result in a decrease of fuel mileage. Such systems are of most use on trucks with large wheels and tires, with considerable ground clearance. All this adds up to off road prowess, and poor handling on road.
All wheel drive uses a center differential, with or without automatic locking features, and is used to improve the traction of street cars on difficult surfaces – ie wet, snow, loose dirt or gravel, but is not meant for hard core off roading. There is a slight fuel mileage penalty, of 1-2 MPG, but nothing like that of a four wheel drive system. All wheel drive systems typically are single speed and do not have a low range. Such systems are used in race and rally cars to provide optimum traction under most circumstances and are considered performance enhancing.

all wheel drive is used in off-taran road and harsh weather conditions plus uses more gas…
two wheel drive town/city use..uses only front two or back two wheels, less gas use. you can also tow high heavier things.
hope it helps

As the posters said above 2 wd are when 2 wheel do the pushing and 4 wheel drives are car that have ALL 4 wheel doing the pushing.
For everyday car 2WD are better for gas mileage. The same car in 2wd is always better in gas mileage. And the cars are simpler so they are cheaper to buy and fix.
The 4WD are good at 2 things (1) snow / off road driving (2) extreme high end racing / rally.
I own an Audi A4 (4WD) and Civic (front wheel drive). Out of 365 days a year, the Honda is just as good (or better when it comes to mileage) as the Audi for 354 days. But then when it snows, the Audi is KING. I can easily climb my 30 degree driveway with 6 inch to 10 inches of snow. While other cars are sliding and even slipping backwards and into the side walls. My Civic can barely drive over 2 or 3 inches of snow (especially if they become packed and icy – on flat surface.
But the Audi is more expensive to keep. The maintenance is a nightmare (I try to do most of my own repair but it is mostly impossible for me). In general 4WD have much more machine to maintain (and repair).
Good Luck

well in Four Wheel Drive all the 4 Wheels are powerd by the Engine, where as Two Wheel Drive is where either the Front 2 Wheel or the Rear 2 Wheels are powered by the Engine.
I think Two Wheel Drive is more quicker then Four Wheel Drive but a Four Wheel Drive car has more benifit over Two Wheel Drive in Slippery or Rough conditions but basically is more of a Gas Guzzler then Two Wheel Drive.
Lamborghini's and alot of Porsche 911's are Four Wheel Drive where as Ferrari's are Two Wheel Drive (rear Axle).
Well in a 1 mile Sprint with the Following cars:-
1)Lamborghini Murcielago, All Wheel Drive, 6.2 litre V12, 580 bhp, 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, top speed 206 mph.
2)Pagani Zonda C12 S, Two Wheel Drive (Rear Axle), 7.3 litre V12, 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, top speed 215 mph.
well the Pagani Zonda C12 S will win why? because the the Pagani Zonda C12 S is Rear Wheel Drive as the power and torque is sent to the Rear Wheels as the Lamborghini Murcielago will struggle due to all the power is Distributed to all four wheels, but if the Track is wet or lets say rough then the Lamborghini Murcielago will win because it is All Wheel Drive as all four wheels will grip the tarmac with full force where as the Pagani Zonda C12 S will struggle due to the Rear Wheels are not able to grip the Tarmac as good as Four Wheel Drive.
